The Daotar stared ahead of him, where the slim kroter of the Daotarkon loped beside the Sarkâs snow-white zamph. He was more at fault than the Sark, for this foolish and unprovoked war, thought Barand Thon. The Daotarkon, or Supreme Commander of the great Host of ThurdisâHajash Tor by nameârode his sleek racing kroter easily, his purple cloak floating behind him, one mailed hand balled into an iron fist, resting on his hip. His greed for glory and ambition for power were the spurs that goaded this war forward, the Daotar thought slowly. Not the Sarkâs pitiful dreams of divine guidance. The Sark was only a madman. The Daotarkon, however, was rotten to the heart.
His heart a leaden weight in his breast, Barand Thon rode on, brows knotted in slow, deep thought, as the great army came to its rendezvous with a smaller force contributed by Shembis, a small city south of Thurdis, part of the growing Empire of the Dragon City, and moved on towards Patanga where the fate of many nations would waver in the balance.

An icy shock! Thongor struck the surface of an icy torrent, and plunged deepâdeepâinto the swirling waters. An underground river, hurtling through the lightless and unknown caverns beneath the crypts of Thurdis! He struck out against the whirling current, and fought his way to the surface, gasping for breath, throwing his wet mane of hair back out of his face with a toss of his head. Treading water, he called out to Ald Turmis, his voice booming and echoing down the rough-walled tunnel. No answer!
